Scott County Industrial Training Center
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What are the courses available at the Industrial Training Center?
Electrical Hydraulics
Motor Control Pneumatics
Mechanical Drives Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
I heard this training program is really unique. What does that mean?·
The program is based on state-of-the-art training curriculum and equipment. It’s interactive, meaning you don’t just sit there and read a textbook or have an instructor lecture to you.
We’ve gotten away from the “old school” semester format. You can start your program at any time and work at your own pace, simply because this curriculum is self-guided. But, don’t let that scare you, there is always a qualified instructor available to answer any questions you have and to help guide you as needed.
Are these courses for beginners or what? ·
Actually, we’ve got the training curriculum to teach the six course subjects above from beginning through advanced levels.
How would I know where to start?·
The instructor will personally work with you to assess exactly where you should start. He assesses you through written testing and also “hands-on” demonstration of your current skills.
Let’s say I started taking the AC/DC course from the beginning. How long would it take
me to complete the course?·
Well, the AC/DC consists of six LAPs – or Learning Activity Packets. It will take you, on average, about five to eight hours of lab time to complete each LAP. That would work out to about 30 to 42 hours of lab time to complete the AC/DC course.
Are there any prerequisites or other classes I’ll need to take before I can start courses at the
Industrial Training Center?
As long as you have a high school diploma or a G.E.D., you can start right in. If you don’t have either of these, you will need to take a short reading and math test to ensure that you will be successful in this program.
MATH? Did you say MATH?·
Well, yes I did, but don’t panic! For the majority of the courses, you just need to be able to handle basic addition, subtraction, dividing and multiplying. However, as you proceed into the programs, you will also need to know basic algebra. We offer classes in basic math and algebra right next door at the LifeLong Learning Center.
READING? ·
All courses are written at about the 8th grade level. No intimidating text books here!· Are their tests? How will I be graded?
Of course there are tests! We’ve got to have some way to make sure you’re learning what you’re supposed to learn and don’t get yourself or someone else hurt! Seriously, we are determined to provide a sound, high quality training program so that when you get through a course you know what you’re doing. There is a short quiz at the end of each LAP and a “hands on” demonstration of your newly acquired skills. You must get at least an 80% on the quiz, BUT you must pass the “hands on” demonstration with a score of 100%.
What happens if I pass the quiz, but don’t pass the “hands on” demonstration – or vice versa? ·
You will be required to go back and review the previous LAP again until you feel comfortable that you are ready to again attempt the quiz and/or “hands on” demo. You will be allowed to attempt to pass the quiz or demo for any particular LAP no more than two times. If you do not pass the second time, you will be required to schedule a one-on-one tutoring session with the instructor, outside of normal operating hours, before attempting the quiz or demo again. The fee for this one-on-one tutoring is $50 per hour.
Is there any homework involved, or is all work done at the center? ·
NO HOMEWORK, unless, of course, you want to review your manuals (which are yours to keep for future reference).
When is the Industrial Training Center open?·
We are constantly adjusting the schedule to better accommodate our students – and will continue to do so as the demand grows. Currently, the center is open Monday and Wednesday, 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Does the employer get my grades or know how I am doing?·
Only if your employer is paying your tuition. However, you are required to give your permission (sign a release) allowing us to provide this information to your employer.
What kind of certification will I get from taking these courses?·
The Scott County Industrial Training Center has partnered with Ivy Tech Sate College to provide students with college credit for completed modules. Should a student choose to pursue an industrial-related degree program, these credits will apply towards degree requirements at any higher learning institution that would normally accept Ivy Tech credits.
Ivy Tech has also created five Technical Certificates especially for students working at our center (please see the attached).
You will also receive a Certificate of Completion from Ivy Tech for every course you complete. This certificate will list the skills you have acquired in each Learning Activity Packet (LAP) of that course.
