Creating a WEB of SUPPORT AND TECHNOLOGY!
What CAPE is doing for Scott County!!
- Scott School District 1 had a dream of transforming their historic, but abandoned,
Austin Middle School building into a bright, renovated community center to be used by Austin residents from preschool ages to senior citizens.
CAPE is provided the dollars to paint, renovate, upgrade and equip this building! It is open to the public for a multitude of uses.
- Scott School District 2 also had a vacant middle school building that was quickly
falling into disrepair.
CAPE dollars restored this building by renovating space for an expanded Unity School and built a state-of-the art CYBER CAFÉ for students throughout the community to use.
- Employers and community leaders were concerned about the high number of people
not completing school in Scott County.
CAPE is fully funding the Unity School for Scott 1 and 2 to provide alternative education for students not succeeding in the regular classroom. CAPE also funds space for GED and Literacy programs and provides study materials and transportation for people to access these programs
- Parents who were not successful themselves in school said they wanted better communication
with schools and wanted to learn how to help their children.
CAPE is providing Family Resource staff to help parents and schools connect and build a “WEB” of support. CAPE is creating caring teams at each school to ensure parents and children are not left behind. Special programs are in place to assist parents, including those with preschoolers and special needs.
- Studies show children living in poverty don’t have the life experiences needed to compete
with their peers.
CAPE is providing after school clubs, homework assistance, field trips, summer learning experiences, mentoring programs and much more to “even the playing field” for kids. A second round of transportation two days a week ensures all children can participate
- Employers said Scott County needed a more highly skilled workforce.
CAPE has equipped the LifeLong Learning Center with computers, a resource center, software, furnishings and equipment to meet local training needs. CAPE is paying for a Workforce/Community Education Director to coordinate training opportunities and higher learning for all in Scott County.
- Educators said they needed dollars for seminars and workshops and classroom aids to
better meet the needs of their students.
CAPE dollars are sending people to specialized training and bringing resources to the community for students.
- Community leaders said Education needs to be promoted as a community value so that
kids will stay in school and become lifelong learners.
CAPE dollars created Scottie the Dog to tell the story that “Education Makes it Happen!” throughout the county. Scottie posters, Scottie stickers and banners are getting the message out. Scottie is creating excitement among children and adults alike. A BACK TO SCHOOL BASH in August creates excitement and connection for the whole county.
