The EDGE
A 21st Century Community Learning Center
Scottsburg Middle Schools live at the EDGE!
The EDGE serves middle school students by providing a safe, after-school program that challenges, motivates, and encourages learning in fun and exciting ways. It is open Monday through Thursdays from 3:15 to 5:30 PM. Students may sign up for the EDGE through their school counselor.
Students who attend the EDGE spend part of their day in the Work Zone completing the day’s homework, or enhancing their learning through various computer programs.
The other part of their day is spent on academic enrichment programs that involve Moving, Making, or Exploring.Options are things like: Kick-boxing, Yoga, Shake ‘n Bake (cooking), the ‘BIZ (Jr. Achievement), ROCK (Afternoons ROCK), Not Exactly French Fries (French Club), Got Pics? (Photography), and Crazy Creating.
Each six weeks there is a new offering of enrichment programs.
The EDGE also meets from 7:00-8:00am Tuesday – Friday. During this time, students have the opportunity to do “last minute homework” at the “Crunch Time Table.” Students choose among walking, speed-stacking, or playing “brainy” games. The purpose of the morning EDGE is to wake up the Brain & the Body to have the best-possible day at school.
We are excited about the good things happening at the EDGE! Students commented they like “getting their homework done, having help with homework, learning new skills such as cooking, kick-boxing, photography, etc.” We’ve had two EDGY – type contests during the EDGE. Our first ever “belching” contest and “texting” contest. Participants are anxiously waiting the unveiling of contests yet to come! SMS students like life at the EDGE!
Parents are an important part of the program as well. Keep posted to learn about new activities for parents.
(The EDGE is funded through a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant through the Indiana Department of Education and is operated at the Middle School by the Scott County Partnership, Inc.)
